City of Collective Ideals
(2024)
In this participatory workshop, City of Collective Ideals, participants were invited to explore creativity and social dynamics by envisioning a shared urban space. Using mosaic tiles—a fleeting but iconic building material from Southern China’s industrial era—participants reflected on the relationship between urban spaces and their inhabitants. Due to the region's humid climate, these tiles are often found scattered around homes, and they became the key material for the creative process.
Structured like a board game, participants adopted roles such as traveler, mayor, resident, or shop owner. Together, they built their ideal city, with each tile color representing different land uses. Through this collaborative exercise, they explored how various role combinations shaped urban landscapes. In some cases, an anti-commercial city emerged when the mayor and resident united against capitalist forces, while in others, shared visions resulted in highly developed cities.
The work collaborated by participants has become a permanent installation in one of the small “park” within Dongfeng Committee in Ronggui, Shunde—one of the few public spaces not overtaken by parking or tourism. This installation provides an extra activity for locals in comparing difference of different works, fostering a moment of leisure amidst the urban alleys of this special area.
