Ronggui Neighbourhood
(2024)
This series was developed during the residency at Dongfeng Community, Ronggui, as part of the Drifting Lands residency generously sponsored by HE Interaction. It includes a collection of reportage drawings of the people and a composite architectural cross-section, documenting the research and reflections in the area. Ronggui used to the heart of the city, maintaining economic prosperity through agricultural production exports. However it has had to develop tourism to rescue the economic decline since the past decade. Scenes that capture the vibe of the past in this area have been hugely erased by ‘Internet Celebrity Economy’.
The drawing depict different facades of silent, overlooked residences within the community, collaged together to form a new, imagined landscape. These works serve as a creative response to the displacement of 384 households, capturing buildings often too fragmented to be photographed in a single frame.
This series also acts as a visual ethnography, capturing fleeting micro-events in the public spaces of Dongfeng Community. Combining imagery and text, it seeks to connect various historical moments and temporalities, revealing the layered stories embedded in the neighborhood’s everyday life.
